Cameron Munster has added another step in the rich Confraternity Carnival history with his appointment as Queensland’s new men’s State of Origin captain.
Munster replaces Daly Cherry-Evans as Maroons skipper for the second match in the Origin series in Perth next week.
Munster (Emmaus College, Rockhampton) and Cherry-Evans (St Patrick’s College, Mackay) are the only Confraternity Carnival graduates to captain Queensland in Origin matches.
But Munster, Queensland’s 192nd Origin player, will be joined by plenty of Confro graduates next week with FOG #205 Xavier Coates (Marymount College, Burleigh Waters), FOG #188 Valentine Holmes (Ignatius Park College, Townsville), FOG #217 Harry Grant and debutant Kurt Mann (St Brendan’s College, Yeppoon) and FOG #210 Lindsay Collins (Padua College, Kedron) also named in the Queensland 17-man squad to take the field.
Munster’s appointment comes just three weeks before this year’s Confraternity Carnival in Rockhampton, which heralds a new partnership between the carnival and FOGS.
FOGS (Former Origin Greats) is a non-profit organisation dedicated to preserving the spirit of the Origin series, honouring the elite players who have represented Queensland since 1980 while supporting a range of charitable causes.
The FOGS partnership with Queensland Independent Secondary Schools Rugby League (QISSRL), which runs Confraternity Carnival, will include a range of initiatives including presence of FOGS members at games along with footballs for each of the 72 teams that will participate in this year’s event in Rockhampton.
QISSRL President Peter Elmore congratulated Cameron Munster on the appointment.
“That’s a huge honour for Cameron and he will have the best wishes of the state behind him,” Mr Elmore said.
“The appointment of another former Confraternity Carnival player as Queensland captain continues to underline the importance of the carnival in the state’s rugby league pathway.”
